About Holberton

Holberton School is a 9-month software engineering program built for people who are serious about breaking into technology. No CS degree required. No prior experience needed. Just the commitment to show up, work hard, and learn the way professional engineers actually do, by building real things alongside real people.

The program is project-based from day one. You won't sit through lectures. You'll tackle weekly projects, work through problems with your cohort, and develop the kind of instincts that employers actually hire for.

Global Story

Holberton was founded in Silicon Valley in 2016 with a simple idea: the best way to learn software engineering is to do it. The model worked. The school has since expanded to 35+ campuses across North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia, producing thousands of working engineers across every continent.

The curriculum is the same one used globally, tested and refined across cultures, education systems, and job markets. What you learn here is what engineers are learning everywhere.

Why Holberton in Australia?

Australia needs 1.2 million tech workers by 2030. Traditional pathways are not keeping up. University ICT graduations are undersupplied by thousands each year, and vocational enrollments have been falling. The talent pipeline needs to broaden beyond people who studied computer science out of school.

We launched in Australia in January 2022 to be part of the solution. There was no good middle path for people who wanted to make a serious career move into technology. A university degree takes three to four years and costs tens of thousands of dollars. Short-form bootcamps get you started but rarely get you hired at the level that makes the investment worth it.

Holberton was built to close that gap. The program is long enough to build real depth, structured around the way engineers actually work, and backed by employer relationships that open doors for graduates from day one.

Our graduates have gone on to work at Canva, REA Group, PEXA, RACV, Sportsbet, AWS, NAB, the Department of Defence and more. The tech industry is moving fast right now and the fundamentals we teach are exactly what make you useful in that environment.

Pedagogy

Holberton is built on peer learning. There are no teachers standing at the front of a room delivering content. You learn by doing, and you deepen that learning by teaching.

Every week you work through projects, then bring what you've built and what you've learned into the group. You explain your thinking to your peers, you question theirs, and you work through problems together. This is how engineers actually develop in the workplace, and it is why Holberton graduates tend to hit the ground running when they start their first role.

How much you get out of the program is directly tied to how much you put in. Students who engage fully, who ask questions, who teach others, and who push through the hard weeks consistently outperform those who treat it like a course to be completed.

Weekly Schedule:

You should expect to commit 35+ hours a week across to complete the projects and keep pace with the program.

Sprint 1: Introduction to Software Engineering

Months 1 to 3. You start at the foundation. Before frameworks, before Python, before anything high-level, you learn how software actually works at the system level. This is where you build the mental model that separates engineers who understand what they're doing from those who are just copying code.

Sprint 2: High-Level Programming and Web Development

Months 4 to 6. You move into Python and web development, building on the foundations from Sprint 1. This is where the program starts to look like the work you'll do in your first engineering role.

Sprint 3: Full-stack development & AI Portfolio Project

Months 7 to 9. The final sprint brings everything together. You work with modern JavaScript, build across the full stack, and deliver a portfolio project from scratch using AI tools as part of your development workflow.

Industry Mentorship

Throughout the program you'll have access to 1:1 mentorship from practitioners working across the Australian tech industry. Mentors come from our network of partner companies including Atlassian, Canva, ANZ, NAB, PEXA, Accenture, PEXA and more.

Mentorship is there to help you connect what you're building in the program to how the industry actually works. Ask questions, get perspective, and start building relationships with people who've already made the transition you're making.
